Eighty two years ago today a curious young boy was born into the world without a clue or notion of the inevitable tides he would turn and tribulations he would endure. Not in vain, the man would carry out a movement that would, and did, echo
through the passage of time into the halls of our culturally predisposed perceptions. That man was Martin! Or more specifically Martin Luther King Jr. I dedicate todays Jammie to the man of the hour… Dr. King.
Pick 1: Mos Def – Umi Says
This pick is almost too obvious, but I could not resist. Mos Def spills his heart into this enchanting piece entitled Umi Says. I personally believe we can take this interpretation a little further than the obvious though. I think that the song itself harkens back to a not so distant poem by Marianne Williamson entitled Ou
r Deepest Fear. It goes as follows:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear, Our presence automatically liberates others.
Read that poem and listen to that song and what do you have? Today’s Moment of Zen.
In keep with tradition, as much as I’d like to leave it at that, we must have a second pick. So I will leave you with another oldie, but a goodie by A Tribe Called Quest. Enjoy.
Pick 2: A Tribe Called Quest – Electric Relaxation
I hope you Jammies enjoyed your weekend. School is tomorrow and things are looking great. Lets keep it that way. Until next time my Jammies.
